Mercury Fulminate and Crystal Meth in 'Breaking Bad' Episode 6 of AMCs Breaking Bad has a scene where our hero, Walt, passes a plastic bag of mercury fulminate off as crystal meth. Why mercury fulminate? I guess there arent many easy-to-make explosives that look like crystal meth. The thing is... I dont think fulminate of mercury looks like it was portrayed in the tv show.Mercury fulminate [or fulminate of mercury, Hg(ONC)2] was first prepared in 1800 by Edward Charles Howard. It is an explosive that mainly was used in favor of flints to ignite black powder in a firearm. Its pretty easy to make... the synthesis involves dissolving mercury in nitric acid and adding ethanol to the solution. However, you end up precipitating a white to grayish-brown powder (depending on purity) like what you see in this photo and not big chunks of glassy crystals, as seen in Breaking Bad.Although mercury fulminate is easy to prepare, you dont want to try it. The explosive is highly sensitive to just about everything... shock, sparks, flame, friction, and heat. I dont think Walt could have been so casual handling a bag of it without having a little accident. If you dont blow yourself up with the compound, you could gas yourself with fumes from the synthesis (reaction should be done outdoors or inside a fume hood). Then there is the product... mercury compounds are toxic. The mercury doesnt magically disappear when the compound explodes.The episode got me wondering. If you were in charge of props for a tv show and were asked to come up with crystal meth, what would you use? Im going to guess using the illegal drug would not be an option. In many cases, innocent groups of people would be blamed for the disaster and massive witch hunt like behavior would take place where the group would be hunted down and tortured or even killed in the belief that it would end the ordeal. Plagues have been repetitive in history and sometimes with no specific pattern. The Bubonic Plague of 1347 made appearances repeatedly afterwards throughout Europe and the Middle East, though not on as much of a large scale, the last of which ended in 1844. (Watts, 1997) Even in modern society the fear of people resides; at the hint of an outbreak, such as the bird flue of 2004, global economies have been affected and many industries have suffered. The Black Death holds the greatest number of victims in such a short time span than any other plague in history and this resulted in economic, social and political affects that have lasted for centuries and played a major role in the art and painting to follow. 14th Century: The Century of Changing European civilization and Fine Arts Medieval Europe was under an extreme burden at the turn of the century. The demographics of medieval Europe grew to an unprecedented scale. The population had grown to the brink of starvation. Only under the best conditions would the fields' yield enough to feed the population. The Black Death struck in 1347 and decimated the European population. The Black Death was a necessity to prevent overpopulation and economic decline. The economy of the fourteenth century was in a state of decline. The population boom along with the shortage of food was leading Europe down a road to starvation. The climate in Western Europe also was beginning to change at the turn of the fourteenth century. Otherwise, it would be out of order to speak of Tsotsi’s crime as taking place within Johannesburg (Hood, 2005). The author also uses special effect filmmaking strategies to make the setting very plausible and congruent with the plot. Specifically, lightning techniques have been used to this effect. In instances where Tsotsi and his gang carry night raids, weak light is used, thereby making the audience believe that such criminal undertakings are nocturnal. Through the use of silhouettes, Tsotsi and his proteges are also densely shadowed, so that they are easily identified as malefactors. The failure to use proper lighting could have portrayed Tsotsi’s criminal exploits as taking place during daytime, and thereby painting Johannesburg as an insecure, crime-riddled city where crimes happen even during broad daylight. Lance Gewer and Gavin Hood as the director and cinematographer respectively showcase their dexterity and ingenuity in filmmaking by making the movie polyglot. The movie consists of languages such as English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu, and thereby rightly painting Johan nesburg not only as a polyglot but also a cultural melting pot. Question 5: The concept of family In all the seven movies, the concept of family is not only ubiquitous, but also given a central thematic value. In the 2009 German film titled The White Ribbon, a family is depicted in Eichwald, northern Germany as the world is on the verge of World War I. Authored by Michael Haneke, the film portrays the family as morally hypocritical. On the facade, the society appears chaste by the virtue of a puritanical pastor’s emphasis on sexual asceticism. However, a thorough look at the society peels back this facade. The village doctor treats other children kindly but has a penchant for humiliating his housekeeper and is found in a compromising situation with his teenage daughter. The family is also presented as morally unstable, even in the person of the baroness who confesses to her husband of being in love with another man. The larger family of human society is painted as unjust and giving way to moral decay. Comparing Cousin Kate and Seduction 'Cousin Kate' is set in the Victorian ages. It is about a young, beautiful working class maiden, who is taken away from her simple life by a lord, to a life of riches and luxuries. She lives a very shameful life because she lives with him and is sexually active with the lord before marriage. She even has a child with him. The maiden’s much more attractive cousin appears and the lord is intrigued by her. He leaves the maiden for Kate. The poem has a twist at the end; Cousin Kate is only interested in his money, but she cannot conceive any children for him, and the maiden already has a son of the lord’s and he will inherit his father’s wealth and land as his heir. A once poor cottage maiden will now live the life of luxury again but in the right way. In ‘I was a cottage maiden’, by using ‘I’, I can tell that the poem is in first person and is being told from the victim’s perspective; this also gives the reader access to the narrator’s thoughts and feelings. The poem is in past tense. ‘Cottage’ emphasises that she is from a working class background and ‘maiden’ suggests that she is a virgin, but being in past tense, the use of the word ‘was’ indicates that she is no more. ‘Hardened by the sun and air’ suggests that she is an outside worker; ‘hardened’ suggests that she is weather beaten. This could mean that her skin could be tanned from working in the hot sun. This also indicates that she is lower class. ‘Contented with my cottage mates’ suggests that she is informal and ordinary. This line also tells me that she is happy with her life. In the next line the narrator says ‘not mindful I was fair’ suggesting that she is unaware of her beauty. She then asks a rhetorical question: ‘why did the great find me out?’ The narrator uses this to show her regret over the lord. On the next line she says ‘and praises my flaxen hair’. This shows the lords pathetic attempts to impress the maiden; the words ‘flaxen hair’ suggest that her hair was stringy, dry and a pale yellow colour. The narrator repeats the rhetorical question ‘why did the great lord find me out?’ again to emphasise her regret and mis-judgement over the lord. ‘To fill my heart with care’ is ambiguous: the first is that she loves him; the second is that the lord brings the maiden worries. In second verse the narrator is very critical towards her supposed

Shakespeare’s Early Life

Although we have many records of his life as a citizen of Stratford, including marriage and birth certificates, little is known about William Shakespeare†s early life and formal education. Due to his success, many would assume that Shakespeare was born and raised in a wealthy noble family but he was actually raised in what would have been considered a middle class family in their time. He was born to middle class parents who lived in Henley Street, Stratford. His father, John, a local businessman made a living as a glove maker and owned his own leather shop. He was a well-known and much respected man that held several important local governmental positions including that of Borough ale-taster to bailiff, the highest public position of office in Stratford. William spent most of his childhood in the small English town of Stratford-upon-Avon. In the sixteenth century, the town was an important agricultural center and market place. â€Å"It is safe to assume that Shakespeare attended the local grammar school that was built and maintained expressly for the purpose of educating the sons of prominent citizens with the sons of burgesses attending free. â€Å"The King's New School was staffed with a faculty of teachers who held Oxford degrees, and whose curriculum included mathematics, natural sciences, Latin language and rhetoric, logic, Christian ethics, and classical literature. â€Å"2 As well as a strong grounding at grammar school, the other significant educational opportunity afforded all middle-class Elizabethans was the mandatory attendance at church where they read either the Geneva or the Bishops' Bible. The ‘Authorized† or King James Bible was not studied by William, as it was not published until the year 1611. Shakespeare did not continue his education and attend the university, since university education was reserved for prospective clergymen and was not a particularly mind-opening experience. However, the education he received at grammar school was excellent, as evidenced by the numerous classical and literary references in his plays. More impressive than his formal education, however, is the wealth of general knowledge exhibited in his works, from a working knowledge of many professions to a vocabulary that is far greater than any other English writer. William Shakespeare married his wife, twenty-six year old Anne Hathaway, at the age of eighteen. Their first daughter, Susanna, was baptized only six months later, which has given rise to much speculation concerning the circumstances surrounding the marriage. In 1585, twins, Hamnet and Judith Shakespeare, were born to the couple. Hamnet died at the young age of eleven by which time Shakespeare had already become a successful playwright. Around 1589, Shakespeare wrote his first play, Henry VI, Part 1. Sometime between his marriage and writing this play, he and his wife moved to London, where he pursued a career as a playwright and actor. In London, he formed an acting company in which he was shareholder, actor, and playwright. â€Å"1 In 1594 Shakespeare became a charter member of The Lord Chamberlain's Men, a group of actors who later changed their name to The King's Men when they gained the sponsorship of King James I. Just a few years later he was considered the â€Å"principal comedian† for the troupe and then later became the â€Å"principal tragedian. † Despite the fact that during this time acting and playwriting were not considered noble professions; successful and prosperous actors were relatively well respected. Shakespeare was, in fact, very successful in his career and he became quite wealthy in the process. He invested his money in Stratford real estate and was able to purchase the second largest house in Stratford, the New Place, for his parents. In 1596, Shakespeare applied for a coat of arms for his family, in effect making himself into a gentleman, and his daughters married successfully and wealthily. William Shakespeare lived until 1616 while his wife Anna died in 1623 at the age of sixty-seven. He was buried in the chancel of his church at Stratford. While Shakespeare is best known for his plays, he also wrote some of the most beautiful sonnets ever produced in the English language. â€Å"His sonnets employ-and occasionally mock-such traditional Petrarchan themes as blind devotion, the value of friendship, and love†s enslaving power. â€Å"1 Together Shakespeare†s plays and sonnets have had an enormous influence on the development on the Modern English language. More famous than his sonnets, Shakespeare†s plays constitute the most significant corpus of dramatic literature in the world. Secular drama was Renaissance England†s most original contribution to the humanistic tradition. Shakespeare took the plots for most of his plays from classical history, medieval chronicles, and contemporary romances, but he used such stories merely as springboards for the exploration of human nature-the favorite pursuit of all Renaissance humanists. â€Å"1 Love, sex, jealousy, greed, ambition, and self-deception are among the definitive human experiences Shakespeare examined in his plays. It can be concluded that Shakespeare†s drama is the first Western Literature to probe the psychological focus that motivates human action. His plays communicate a profound knowledge of the wellsprings of human behavior as revealed in his masterful characterizations of a wide gamut of humanity. The skillful use of poetic and dramatic means to create a unified aesthetic effect out of a multiplicity of vocal expressions and actions is recognized as an achievement unequaled in other literature. Finally, Shakespeare†s employment of poetry within the plays to express the deepest levels of human motivation in relation to individual, social, and universal situations is considered one of the most astounding accomplishments of the human intellect.

Celebrity Role Models

Today’s teens are bombarded with images and activities that don't mirror their lives from hit teen-TV shows like â€Å"The OC† and â€Å"Gossip Girl† to the multitude of entertainment programs and features in magazines. Today's media obsessed society often leads students to believe all they need to ‘be cool' is be thin, blonde and wear the latest designer clothes. The UGLY program aims to help young adults self-esteem by using celebrities, as they know that young people look up to celebrities and their identity is reflected on them. Sometimes this is a good thing and other times it is a bad thing and this is why celebrities need to function as a role model to their audience because of today's celebrity-obsessed society. I plan to expand this theory and reasons behind the celebrity-obsessed society. Celebrities now know that they have a function as a role model to their fans if they want to keep their celebrity status. They have a responsibility now, that celebrities did not have many years ago. The mass media however, play a big part in this as, if the celebrity is not read about then society will loose interest in them and move on to the next influence. The media can make or break a celebrity and can form a celebrity out of nothing. They also play a big part in exposing celebrities and finding out ‘who they really are'. This is another reason our society is so interested in celebrities to show that they are ‘just like us'. And celebrities know that any exposure is good exposure and sometimes will try and get into the tabloid newspapers as much as possible as this then can improve their careers as a celebrity. Whereas other celebrity's like to rebel as they are uninterested in their celebrity status but all celebrities can function as role models and this can be bad for their young fans. Today's mass media society gives reasons why what we read or what we see on television has become our main influence into the world. We watch news and we read the news and we believe what we are told with no questions asked and this is how the media can choose what they discuss on television without the public questioning whether the information is correct or not. Luckily with the invention of the internet we can find alternative news stories discussing different opinions on the subjects if need be. Celebrities are also shown a lot in fashion and gossip magazine's but, instead of being ‘exposed' are shown at their best and informing the public what dress they are wearing or what designer they are sporting. This is also an influence in society but is good for the role model function of celebrities. There are good and bad role models in society. Some were once good role models turned bad and then from bad to good. This is all from the media exposure of their lifestyles. Certain celebrities that are recent high interest in the media are celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Amy Wine house. All these celebrities came about through music but are now just a common face in society and the media and are not so much discussed as their musical talents. A lot of these celebrities act as role models to children and young people and when the media influences them for instance Amy Wine house and drugs it can reflect bad on them. Charlotte Church has grown up in the media eye and children have modeled themselves on her but yet again the media try to portray her as someone bad. Children's presenters or child celebrities need to be very careful about the way they go about their everyday lives. Children and young adults influence themselves on celebrities so much and with the media exposing and being interested in their everyday lives it's harder to keep things secret if they do something bad or have a bad habit. In my essay I want to discuss certain news stories from children's role models that have changed perceptions and that may change the way their fans think as people. Today's mass media society gives reasons why what we read or what we see on television has become our main influence into the world. We watch news and we read the news and we believe what we are told with no questions asked and this is how the media can choose what they discuss on television without the public questioning whether the information is correct or not. Luckily with the invention of the internet we can find alternative news stories discussing different opinions on the subjects if need be. Celebrities are also shown a lot in fashion and gossip magazine's but, instead of being ‘exposed' are shown at their best and informing the public what dress they are wearing or what designer they are sporting. This is also an influence in society but is good for the role model function of celebrities. There are good and bad role models in society. Some were once good role models turned bad and then from bad to good. This is all from the media exposure of their lifestyles. Certain celebrities that are recent high interest in the media are celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Amy Wine house. All these celebrities came about through music but are now just a common face in society and the media and are not so much discussed as their musical talents. A lot of these celebrities act as role models to children and young people and when the media influences them for instance Amy Wine house and drugs it can reflect bad on them. Charlotte Church has grown up in the media eye and children have modeled themselves on her but yet again the media try to portray her as someone bad. Children's presenters or child celebrities need to be very careful about the way they go about their everyday lives. Children and young adults influence themselves on celebrities so much and with the media exposing and being interested in their everyday lives it's harder to keep things secret if they do something bad or have a bad habit. In my essay I want to discuss certain news stories from children's role models that have changed perceptions and that may change the way their fans think as people. This can be very dangerous for future society.

I want to help others in need. I love helping other people. Another reason why I want to become a nurse is because my mom taught me in to become a nurse by many reasons. My mom had a major stroke, she cant walk, talk, eat, see, she is bed ridden, it is hard but my dad and I take very good care of her. I always help out a lot. It is a lot of responsibility for the both of us. I gain a lot of experience from this because I help change her, I give her medicine to her, I help my dad shower her, I o a lot to help my dad out with my mom. As you can see I really do love helping others and I will continue to help others. Yes I did decide my major before I entered college. I knew I wanted to become a nurse when this all happened to my mom in august 26, 2009. Yes It was hard for us when we found out from the doctors that she will never be her self again. Thats when I knew I wanted to become a registered nurse. Yes nursing will be hard but you Just have to follow your dreams and never give up. Yes I am satisfied with my course of study. It is very interesting to be because I love doing the things I do for people. I always help them out when they need money, or if they were sick, I would go take care of them. What was my was joyful because I always knew I loved helping people in so many ways. I would always inspire them. I would never let anyone down I would do the best I can do to help someone out and my family knows that. My friends reaction to me telling them I wanted to become a nurse was very shocking to them because they thought I would never help others. They thought I always hated everyone because I was quiet and because I was shy. Even if I hated someone or dislike someone I would still help them in every kind of way I can. After I told my friends what happened to my mom they were shocked for me. But one day they came up to me saying Jill, I never knew you cared for others so much by helping other people who need the help. Right away they said I am proud of the person you are. They never thought I would want to become a nurse. Did I put a lot of thought into nursing as to becoming my major? Yes I did because I knew a lot of hospitals need nurses. Nursing is very helpful to others because it shows you want to help others. It is a very good to know what you want to become in life. After everything happened to my mom I knew what I wanted to become. After everything with my mom it change life completely. It change my life completely because I knew I wanted to help my mom become a nurse because I saw the way my mom was. I am always helping my dad at things that never thought I was ever going to do but now after everything happened with my mom I know what I want to be. I want to become a registered nurse. There are many types of courses I need for nursing as my major. These courses re basic nutrition chemistry, psychology, human anatomy (structure of the body), physiology (how the body functions), human development, microbiology (germs), nursing science, pharmacology (drugs and medicines) and communication. The amount of time you need to study is about four to six hours of studying on week days and weekends. The more time you study the better you will review the material. It is very important to study and get very good grades. The courses I will be taking for nursing are going to be very useful in the future because you learned everything you need to know about becoming a nurse. You will need to know all the material to become a nurse. The level of difficulty of nursing is very difficult. There is a lot of studying involved. You have to be on task 2417 you cant let nothing get in the way. You have to take it seriously because it is very important because if your not paying attention you can hurt someone. Its difficult because there are a lot of courses you need for nursing. You need to take it seriously or your not going to succeed in to becoming a nurse. There are many and negative, effects of nursing. The positive effects are benefits, helping people who Anton do for themselves, you teach people how to do things for themselves, gives you confidence for dealing with situations. There are many negative effects of a nurse. There are many people who have long hours, exposed to many diseases, low staffing equals more responsibility equals a lot of high stress. College can help me with my nursing study by getting me in the program for nursing and to get my degree in it. No, nursing does not need a degree further than a bachelors degree. You can have your associates, and masters degree in nursing. There are many types of Jobs that are available for nursing. You can work at a hospital, nursing home, become a home health aid anything that is in your field. Are about five, careers that are in my major. No there are not other areas of work directly to nursing. The yearly salary for nursing is $64,690. Does nursing career require traveling? It depends on where you live at. But in New York, it does not require you to travel. Nursing will always be my major. I will always help people in need. It is my Job to help others and to never let them down. It is my Job to make sure they are well cared for while they are in the hospital.

Here’s a discussion of the five types of infinitives. 1. Subject An infinitive can constitute the subject of a sentence. For example, in â€Å"To go, even after all that trouble, didn’t seem worthwhile anymore,† â€Å"to go† is the action that drives the sentence. 2. Direct Object In the sentence â€Å"We all want to see,† â€Å"to see† is the direct object, the noun (or noun substitute) that receives the action of the verb. â€Å"To see† refers to a thing being done or, in this case, desired to be done: the act of seeing. 3. Subject Complement In â€Å"My goal is to write,† â€Å"to write† is the subject complement. A subject complement looks just like a direct object, but the difference is in the type of verb preceding it. The verb in the previous example, want, is a transitive verb. (Transitive verbs have two defining characteristics: They precede a direct object, and they express an action.) In â€Å"My goal is to write,† the verb is a copular, or linking, verb one that links a subject to a word or phrase that complements it. (In this sentence, â€Å"to write† is the goal, so it’s the complement of goal. Note that in the previous example, â€Å"to see† is what those referred to as we want, but it’s not the complement of we.) 4. Adjective In â€Å"She didn’t have permission to go,† â€Å"to go† modifies permission it describes what type of permission is being discussed so the phrase serves as an adjective. 5. Adverb In â€Å"He took the psychology class to try to understand human behavior,† â€Å"to understand (human behavior)† explains why the taking of the class occurred, so it’s an adverb modifying the verb took.
